Native Warm-Season Grasses for Mid-South Forage Production

چکیده

Vigorous Summer Growth Peak growth of these grasses occurs during summer. They break dormancy in late March and early April and then grow rapidly from mid-May through midsummer. In late summer, growth slows until fall dormancy, usually in October. The maturity dates of the various species vary somewhat, but all follow this pattern. They remain dormant through winter. Five Key Species While there are many species of grasses native to the Mid-South, this publication will focus on five species that are important for forage production: big bluestem, little bluestem, indiangrass, switchgrass and eastern gamagrass.

Warm-Season Grasses for Hay and Pasture

Switchgrass, Indiangrass, and big bluestem are warmseason grasses that are a suitable alternative for summer pasture in Iowa. Their advantage over cool-season grasses such as bluegrass, bromegrass, and orchardgrass is their ability to produce during midsummer. These warm-season perennial grasses start growing in late spring as air and soil temperatures increase. Leaf growth often occurs in earl...

Moisture Concentration Variation of Silages Produced on Commercial Farms in the South-Central USA

Preservation of forage crops as silage offers opportunity to avoid the high risk of rain-damaged hay in the humid south-central USA. Recent developments with baled silage or baleage make silage a less expensive option than typical chopped silage. Silage has been important in the region primarily for dairy production, but baleage has become an option for the more extensive beef cattle industry i...

Genetic Engineering for the Improvement of Forage Grass Quality

The forage quality of warm season perennial grasses grown in the Southern States, subtropics, and the tropics is often inadequate and is a major limitation to satisfactory animal performance. Quality improvement of those warm season grasses has been a high priority research objective in breeding programs. Hammond (1987) pointed out that C4 tropical and subtropical grasses generally have lower q...

Using Switchgrass for Forage

Switchgrass is a warm-season perennial grass native to much of the United States. Over the last few years, switchgrass has received renewed interest as a renewable fuel source, since it produces large amounts of cellulose that can be digested and converted to ethanol. The high yields and environmental adaptability of switchgrass make it an excellent choice for biofuel feedstock production. Whil...
